I wanted to share some of the AMAZING work that my Art 101 classes are doing. We just finished up some very large 18x22 portraits done with ebony pencil and also completed these mixed media self portraits last week. The technique was inspired by the work of artist Michelle Caplan. They turned out so well!!

I LOVE the photos! How did you get the transparency and the dots?? Love that!

What a great way to put all the faces together. You can still see everyone clearly but with a twist!

These are wonderful; Michelle's work is so soulful! Is it a
transparency face, then layered underneath? What a wonderful
class, I love all the faces together; A gathered, grouping of goodness~!

What technique do you use to put the face on the collage? Is it a transparency or a photo transfer of some type? I love them!

I would love to know how to add a photographic image over a collaged canvas. Please share your technique. My mother recently passed away and I think this would be a great project for me to try using paper ephemera that contain special memories of her. Thanks!

Hi Christine,
I used to be a high school art teacher and I love the project you did with your class using photos of their faces. I would love to know your technique in getting the image transferred so it's transparent and the background shows through. I've done gel transfers before but wondered if their was a better way to do the transparent photo transfers. Also, how did you get them so high contrast?
Thank you,
Barbara Coburn

Wow! I love the photos. I have been teaching elementary and I am moving to our high school. Your project
would make a great start to our school year. Would you mind sharing?

These are absolutely beautiful projects. I've been experimenting to try to figure out how you did these and I have concluded that you must have used the Photocopy Transfer process. For any art teachers out there wanting to include this lesson plan in your curricula, watch the following video to learn the technique!
