Cathedrals

For all the Mothers out there this is for you. This was emailed to me today and was a huge encouragement.
I hope that you find encouragement in this to continue to build your Cathedrals too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm invisible.

It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, "Can't you see I'm on the phone?" Obviously not. No one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all. I'm invisible.

Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this? Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, "What time is it?"

I'm a satellite guide to answer, "What number is the Disney Channel?"

I'm a car to order, "Right around 5:30, please."

I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated summa cum laude - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going ... she's going ... she's gone!

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England. Janice had just returned from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in. I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself as I looked down at my out-of-style dress; it was the only thing I could find that was clean.

My unwashed hair was pulled up in a clip and I was afraid I could actually smell peanut butter in it. I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, "I brought you this."

It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe. I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription: "To Charlotte, with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees."

In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work:

(1) No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names.
(2) These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished.
(3) They made great sacrifices and expected no credit.
(4) The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.

A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, "Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof?

No one will ever see it." And the workman replied, "Because God sees." I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, "I see you, Charlotte. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become."

At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride.

When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, "My mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for three hours and presses all the linens for the table." That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, to add, "You're gonna love it there."

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

God Bless You as you build your Cathedrals!

Dreaming of vacation....

Flipfloppage
It is always at my most busy time that I get distracted thinking about vacation.....escape, something to look forward to.

This page is from our family travel journal that we did on our Hawaii trip last year. I posted a photo album on the side bar. It just makes me happy and I wanted to share it with you. Do you have any special ways of documenting your vacations? I love to keep all the everyday things like receipts, brochures and notes together and add paint and drawing to it....

Just a happy distraction to share with you today:).

Gifts from the Sea

Seaweed

Look what I found on my beach walk! To me these treasures are better than anything I could buy. I am working on product for next year (I WISH I could show you, but I can't until next January, darn) I can show you some of my inspiration though. I can't wait to make some nature prints of them, some cyanotypes or scans. Finding things like this makes my heart race with excitement.

Cottonspointmirror

I am posting a little project that I did last year. I used my Cotton's Point paper, Fresh Flowers Transparency and a little strip of paper from the Romance collection.  All of this product is old and no longer available, I am doing my best to update this theme for next year, can't wait. The mirror was an IKEA purchase and cost $1.99:).This romantic ocean theme is my favorite one to work on and the one closest to my heart...back to work I go!

Sonnets Studio and My Budding Photographer

Sonnetsstudiobylauren

Above are the shots taken by my 6 year old!

Lilphotographer_1

Yesterday I had the  opportunity to visit Sharon  and Beth at the Sonnets Studio Beach Cottage ( just a few blocks from my own home/studio).  Sharon and I design product  for the same company and go to the same church and yet with our busy life and schedule we have not taken the time to have a lunch date. We finally got it on our calendar and yesterday my little one and I had the pleasure of going to the magical coastal cottage. The cottage/studio was brimming with projects from Sharon's upcoming book as well as products from all of Sonnet's licensing ventures.  My licensing business is in its infancy and it was inspiring for me to be around these women that are following their dreams, are a bit further down the path than I and are willing to give insight and compare notes.

I gave my 6 year old the camera to take a few photos (and give me some time to chat) and when I got home and downloaded them I was impressed with what she captured (not that it is difficult to capture a good shot at Sharon's studio:)

Poppies and Decor8

Poppies

Getting in the mood for SPRING today. This is a quick little piece that I did. I glued some silk dupioni fabric to a canvas board and painted these poppies on top, I used my favorite Golden Interference Paint in the background . I would really like to start expanding my art licensing to do more in the home decor market . So far I am doing most of my licensing in the craft market, which has been great, but I really would love to do posters and prints and gift items as well. This is a good goal for 2006.

And  speaking of home decor and decorating. Look at this fabulous site called Decor8 !! I am so honored that she did a review of my blog, made my day. I love her style, great shopping links and info about super cool stuff.

Studio Friday (Inspiration)

Cd7
I am doing my first Studio Friday  . I don't know if I entered myself into it properly:) I have been checking out this SF site for about a month and could not resist the topic of  INSPIRATION. That is a favorite topic of mine!

This is a page from my inspiration notebook  I also have boards in my studio to generate ideas when I am creating and working on collections of art. These second two pages show my inspiration for a scrapbook paper collection I designed called Cotton's Point.

I love getting bills....

Junkmail
well not really paying them but I can't wait to open them and see what kind of pattern I find inside the envelope. I have been in front of my computer screen a lot during my available work time and when I have design projects that require digital work I am away from my art studio and sitting in my home office plugging away. Today I went down to the studio to tidy up (always a good distraction/or a method of procrastination:) I have this growing pile of ripped up envelopes just waiting to be integrated into some collages...I really love the little windows they are perfect little framing devices. Getting bills in the mail seems slightly less painful knowing that I might get some free collage material. "Recycle and Re-Use" is the motto around the family art studio. I am posting some collages showing how I like to integrate these bits of junk mail scraps into my work.

This is a series I did a few years ago just for fun. I layered the envelopes in the background added some acrylic paint and some old music (another fave), added some drawing, stitching and did a foil stencil on the top.

Same with this one. Envelopes, music, postage and acrylic paint in the background and a foil stencil technique on the top. I am planning on introducing many of my foil techniques on this blog later in the Spring  and early Summer so please come back often if you are interested in learning about any of these unique mixed media art techniques. FYI, for these 6x6 collages I used a paper called Stonehenge, love the weight of it and the way the edges tear, it is a printmaking paper.
01lgdaisyheart1_1
These larger  (10x18) collages were done on an inexpensive rice paper (I buy it in a pad). I layered different colors of pastel foil in the background with the music. The hearts are from my beloved envelope stash!
03lg1_1
The heart at the bottom is the negative of the heart from the previous collage. I love to use negative and positive shapes in my collage and never throw away the negative from cut/punched or diecut shapes.
I wish you could see the sparkle in this art....you will just have to imagine it.  Hope this helps to ease the pain of those bills even if it is ever so slightly!

Another weakness of mine...

Napkin2

Hope everyone had a lovely weekend! I took the day off today since the children had a holiday and we went and saw the Curious George movie...it was so cute and *LOVE* the soundtrack.  We went to Urban Outfitter to buy some t-shirts and then to my favorite store (Anthropologie)  and I bought this fun cloth napkin. I love the complimentary colors and think I might cut it up and glue it in my journal or I might applique it on some jeans or something...love the gesture of the flowers. One major weakness that  I have is for printed fabrics (textiles was my major in art school and if I see a good print I just can't pass it by.... I have been known to cut up our clothes for collage and art purposes, my children know to watch out when I have the scissors!:) Looking in my sketchbooks  you will see bits and pieces of  our clothes (this little strip of my daughter's dress inspired the colors for the Blush Collection ) Needless-to-say you won't find a full set of cloth napkins at my house since I usually only purchase one and my children are the ones on the playground with strategically cut out patches in their clothes:)

I also bought this pretty aqua and rasberry paisley plate. I think I will hang it in my kitchen or put it in the studio for color inspiration.

Don't forget to post your favorite color combo. The  Fresh Flower's contest  ends tomorrow night. I will announce the two winners on Wednesday morning. So stay tuned!

Magazine Addiction

Lilacandlime

I go to Walmart to buy boring stuff like paper towels and juice boxes and I *somehow*end up in the magazine aisle looking at home decor magazines and scrapbook magazines. I usually spend way too long  doing this and then have to rush to get the shopping done. Another thing I do (which is becoming cost prohibitive) is purchase a magazine just for one picture or inspirational thing. I bought a magazine yesterday just for this color combo. Isn't it an amazing complimentary color combo with that high contrast graphic black and white?? Love it !...and it did help me get my color inspiration for a Take Ten  article that I was working on (good justification,right?!)....so I guess it was worth the $4.00.....don't you think??

Inspiration

Cd6

I have added some new images to the photo albums. I scanned pages from my sketchbooks too. I always love to see artists sketchbooks and studios, don't you? I also really like to hear about what motivates an artist  to create. See Sharon's blog for a wonderful post on her creative catalyst (I only wish I could write like her, she has a gift:).For me it is color, pattern, history, nature and beauty. As a designer and artist I am always tearing things out of magazines, purchasing  greeting cards, post cards, buying swatches of fabrics, wrapping paper, taking photos of nature and patterns, buying old books and ephemera and basically accumulating a lot of stuff! Since I recently started designing for the scrapbook industry my accumulation of those products has grown too, lol. There are so many beautiful papers and embellishments out there now (have you seen Basic Grey's new Urban Couture Collection  now that is some cool paper, looks like something you would buy in Anthropologie)  I go through periods when I am really good about assimilating my little treasures of inspiration  into my sketchbooks, it can almost be an obsession. It is so fun to go through my piles and juxtapose elements together, add a little paint and some stitching and FOIL (more on that later) I do so many little texture and painting samples and never throw away my paintings or sketches that are "rejects" I save them and paste them in my book. It is good to have these idea books and piles of stuff to go through when I am having an artist block. I have been so busy trying to make deadlines lately and I feel my work is suffering and has lost some of its original "heart". I think I need to get back into doing more of these little daily collages just for fun. What inspires you? and how do you get motivated to use your creativity?
