This is the most crazy month for those of us in the art licensing and the surface design industry. Our big tradeshow Surtex is in May. I'll be posting more on my FB page than my blog so please come on over and "like" it to get updates on the studio. In the mean time I'll just post a pretty picture to hold my place while I work away. xo-
I love doing product mock-ups! I've been playing around with a new mockup template. As a designer, I need to show my art on different product types and it's so FUN to see it mocked-up. Keep your fingers crossed that they become "real" product...
Today I'm hosting my friend Traci Bautista's online book tour for her fabulous book Doodles Unleashed. Traci and I have been colleagues in the mixed media world for nearly ten years and I've enjoyed visiting with her yearly at CHA and catching up with her online. Love, love, love her first book Collage Unleashed and this new book is a must have for any art library.
Traci and I both LOVE to use resist techniques in our artwork and she has some wonderfully inspiring art techniques using resist and stencils in the book. Below Traci shares some images and info about using her product Collage Pauge for resist.
In Doodles Unleashed, I share a few techniques using Collage Pauge in other ways than an adhesive, one of my favorite painting techniques is to use it as a resist. It is applied with a brush or applicator tipped bottle to draw and paint designs on the page, once it’s dry I paint over it with acrylic or watercolor to reveal the design. Additional variations include adding glitter, mica or foil for added texture and sparkle. Here are a few examples...
My wonderful licensing partner, Creative Imaginations has generously donated a few packs of Ocean Foil and Sticky2's for me to give away on my blog in celebration of Traci's book. Here is a link so you can see how amazingly easy and fun these Foils and Sticky2's are to use. I've also posted a photo below.
All you have to do is tell me what your favorite time to doodle is. Mine is pretty typical, when I'm on the phone:-). Leave your answer in the comments below and I'll pick a couple of names and announce this weekend.
Head on over to Traci's etsy shop to purchase a signed copy of Doodles Unleashed and also don't forget to hop over to her blog to see more of her art and also catch my free tutorial. You are going to LOVE this book.

This week I'm going to end with a week in review via a gratitude list. Here is what I'm gratefull for this week:
*Monday, a busy day that was mostly spent at IKEA returning and purchasing bits and parts for our kitchen renovation (which is almost done!). A cousin that is a contractor and is making this remodel process much more comfortable than it would otherwise be. My mom saving me and shuttling the kids to dance and swim and making a pot of tortilla soup for us for dinner. Grateful!
*Tuesday,Valentine's day proved to be yet another busy one and it began with a lovely gift from the husband. He found a beautiful old piece of weathered wood on the beach and transfered one of my collages on to it. This process added an additional unique texture to the art that I LOVE. The day ended with a delivery of "Sprinkles" cupcakes from a dear friend. YUM. Grateful!
*Wednesday was a rainy cold day (love those days in the studio) and lot's was accomplished with the kitchen reno. My work day was filled with a fun project from my agent to design paper partyware. The day ended with spotting a "double rainbow!!" and catching the most amazing sunset.Grateful!
*Thursday working on wall art for a potential licensee presentation, again a fun project.Thankful for the flexibility I have in my design job to be able to teach art at my kids school and attend to various meetings and activities they are involved in. Grateful for a resourceful husband who cooked a meal for me so I could work in the evening, a very loving gesture. My sweet cousin Dustin's heart surgery was re-scheduled once again and although this doesnt seem so positve, the bright side was to see the strength of my family and the ability to rally together in times like these. Grateful!
*Friday a day off from school. Need I say more! Grateful!
Based on this list, my life looks pretty darn good (and I guess it is, if I choose to focus on the positive)...Often I'll read blogs and think, "is their life really that perfect?" and of course I know its not, life has a lot of messy moments mixed in, no one is spared of the negative. We live in an imperfect and fallen world, that's a given. It's how we choose to handle it. God's word gives some pretty clear wisdom about this, and that's another thing to be GRATEFUL for!!
English Standard Version (ESV)
22 A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
Have a joyful and artful weekend and choose gratitude!
